In order to economize, the city of Topeka, Kansas is considering de-criminalizing domestic violence. I htought what you are thinking, 'That can't be right. I'm gonna click the link, and it'll turn out to be something else, or sound worse than it is. Yeah, no. Go ahead and click it. You'll see.
My first thought: wow, that's stupid. Even if protecting the victims of family violence were not enough -- and apparently it's not -- that is going to cost more in the not-even-that-long run, in health-related expenses alone.
And second: if you need to de-criminalize something, how about possession of marijuana? There's a victimless crime if there ever was one. In fact, let's release from custody everyone who was jailed for possession, where there was no other crime committed. That'll save us all some money.
